Sacral Chakra Explained: Symptoms, Blockages, and How to Heal It

If you have experienced creative blocks, emotional numbness, or being overwhelmed by emotions that you cannot make sense of, then your sacral chakra might need some TLC. In Sanskrit, the chakra is called Svadhisthana. The sacral chakra governs pleasure, emotions, creativity, flow, and how we relate to others. When it flows freely, everything works smoothly and feels enjoyable. If blocked, you might experience as if some crucial aspect of your life is drying out or overflowing.

Here, we are going to talk about the sacral chakra, its location within the body, symptoms of blockages and imbalances, symptoms of sacral chakra opening, and ways to heal it. This article is a part of our general guide on the 7 chakras. If you do not know anything about the chakra system, you should start there.

What Is the Sacral Chakra?

Chakras in the yogic and tantric context are said to be spinning energy centers on the spine associated with certain physiological, emotional, and psychological qualities. The sacral chakra is the second chakra of the seven major chakras in yogic tradition. Its Sanskrit name ‘Svadhisthana’ means one’s own dwelling place. It indicates its association with one’s relationship with his/her feelings and desires.

Main associations are:

  • Element: Water
  • Color: Orange
  • Qualities: Creativity, pleasure, sensuality, emotional intelligence, adaptability, relationships
  • Seed mantra: VAM
  • Body areas: Lower abdomen, hips, reproductive organs, kidneys, bladder

The water element gives a clue about its qualities. Flowing water is clear, adaptable, and nourishing, whereas stagnant water is muddy, and flooding water is devastating. The sacral chakra functions similarly in terms of emotional and energy flow.

Where Is the Sacral Chakra?

One frequently asked question is “Where is my sacral chakra?” The sacral chakra can be found in the lower abdomen, two to three finger widths below the navel point, located right above the sacrum at the base of the spine. For visualization purposes, most of us imagine that our sacral chakra is a little orange wheel or flower that rests inside our pelvic basin, going from the pubic bone to below the belly button.

It is no wonder that the sacral chakra is so related to the pelvis, hips, and lower back because these parts of our body are the places where we keep our tension after experiencing stress or grieving. If you would like to palpate the area yourself, place a palm on the lower part of your abdomen, breathe slowly, and observe any sensations there.

Signs of a Balanced Sacral Chakra

Before exploring issues, it is important to understand how balance feels. Some signs of a balanced sacral chakra include:

  • Ease of expression and emotional processing
  • Natural creativity
  • Ability to experience pleasure without guilt or excess
  • Healthy, respectful boundaries and relationships
  • Physical and mental flexibility, including flexible hips

Balance does not equate to happiness. Balance is the capacity to experience your emotions, let them pass, and go back to center.

Blocked Sacral Chakra: Common Symptoms

Blockages and an underactive sacral chakra often manifest as numbness, withdrawal, or lack of energy and vitality. Signs of imbalance include:

  • Emotionally and mentally
  • Feelings of emotional numbness or detachment
  • Difficulty with creativity or a lack of inspiration
  • Fear of intimacy and lack of trust
  • Feelings of guilt or shame when experiencing pleasure
  • Lack of motivation and life lacking meaning or color

Physical

  • Stiff hips and a tight lower back
  • Low sexual drive or problems with sexuality
  • Urinary or reproductive problems
  • Heavy and sluggish energy in the pelvis

Remember that physical symptoms can be caused by many different medical conditions. Working with chakras should never replace proper treatment from a healthcare provider, so if you have any ongoing physical symptoms, please see a doctor.

Overactive Sacral Chakra: What It Looks Like

When the sacral chakra is overactive, the energy is in abundance, and there is too little containment. While blockage is like a dried-up riverbed, overactivity is like a flood. This condition might show up as:

  • Intense mood swings or emotional flooding
  • Emotional dependency or clinginess in intimate relationships
  • Lack of control and self-indulgent behavior
  • Eating or drinking excessively, overspending on consumer goods, and indulging in sensual pleasures
  • Using sex as a way to escape from emotions
  • Problems with setting healthy boundaries

Being overactive is not bad per se; it usually shows a profound yearning for some type of connection or comfort that hasn’t found a proper way to be expressed.

Sacral Chakra Opening Symptoms

Once you start working on this energy center, you will likely encounter what are known as sacral chakra opening symptoms. They differ from one person to another, and they are not always intense, but here are some common ones:

  • Emotional release: Tears or laughter that come out of nowhere as your stored emotions start to surface
  • Creativity boost: A rush of creative thoughts or the need to engage in writing, painting, dancing, or cooking
  • Increased sensitivity: Experiencing your emotions more intensely than before, at least for a couple of days
  • Physical sensations: Feelings of warmth, tingling, and softening around your hips and lower abdomen
  • Desire shifts: A stronger sense of enjoyment of pleasure and intimacy
  • Restlessness or tiredness: The way your body adjusts to the new patterns

These symptoms tend to be temporary. In case they become too much to bear, pause, refocus on your grounding work, and consult a professional therapist or instructor if necessary.

What Causes Sacral Chakra Blockages?

  • The Sacral Chakra is influenced by our early experiences involving emotions, safety, and enjoyment. The following are possible sources of blockages:
  • Emotional repression, like being told to “stop crying” or “settle down”
  • Body shaming, sexual shaming, or shame around your body and desires
  • Relationship issues, betrayal, or loss
  • Stress, burnout, and perfectionism
  • Trauma, for which therapy may be required in addition to any spiritual work
  • A contemporary culture of sedentary living and lack of creative play

Knowing where your blockage comes from does not involve judgment or criticism. It merely allows you to decide what practices work best for you.

How to Heal the Sacral Chakra

And what about the healing process for this chakra? The positive aspect is that this particular chakra responds quite well to physical activity, breathing techniques, creativity, and self-compassion.

1. Open the hips with yoga

As the hips are the physical representation of the sacral chakra, one way of opening this chakra is using poses like Pigeon, Goddess, Cobbler’s Pose (Baddha Konasana), Low Lunge, and Happy Baby pose. One needs to move slowly and breathe into the lower belly area without trying too hard. Hip circles and flowing wave-like vinyasa sequences reflect the element of water as well.

2. Practice deep belly breathing

Put a hand on the lower belly and breathe deeply to make sure the stomach inflates on the inhale and deflates on the exhale. Five to ten minutes of this technique calms down the nervous system and brings attention to this area. In case you have an active sacral chakra, elongating the exhale calms it down.

3. Meditate on orange and water

Find a comfortable sitting position and imagine an orange light shining inside your lower abdomen, swirled around like warm water. Mentally or silently chant the mantra VAM with every exhale. Just ten minutes a day is enough to develop greater emotional sensitivity and groundedness. You can meditate next to water, or even just imagine it flowing through you.

4. Invite water and nature in

Help you connect to this element. Water practices are a very simple and pleasant practice that will help you with emotional fluidity.

5. Make space for creativity and play

Creativity is the natural language of the sacral chakra. Dance in your kitchen, write freely in your journal, draw badly intentionally, or experiment with cooking. What is more important than the result is the experience of enjoying the process itself.

6. Work with emotions and boundaries

Journaling prompts may be helpful in this case: What am I feeling now, and where does it reside in my body? What is pleasure free from guilt? Where do I need to set clearer boundaries? In the event that you lean more towards being overactive, try to pause in your actions and understand what you really seek at the moment.

7. Nourish yourself with warm colors and foods

It is beneficial for many individuals to include in their diet foods that are orange in color, including oranges, carrots, sweet potatoes, and mangoes. It is also important to eat healthy fats and stay hydrated. Be surrounded by warm colors or even wear orange.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will it take to heal the sacral chakra?

There is no set period of time. Some people experience results within a few weeks of practice, whereas some others require months to achieve the goal. The key is consistency and a gentle approach.

Can one heal several chakras at once?

Yes, the chakras work together. Most healers recommend working on the root chakra first, as it helps to become secure and opens the sacral chakra up to emotions.

Is crying a normal process when healing the sacral chakra?

Yes, emotional release is the most typical sign of the sacral chakra opening. If it is too much for you or connected to your trauma, consult an expert.

Final Thoughts

The sacral chakra encourages you to feel, create, and experience life fully. If your sacral chakra is either closed, overactive, or underdeveloped, some simple but constant efforts will help you balance the energy: rock your hips, take deep breaths into your stomach area, create something with your hands, and let your emotions be known. In most cases, balancing the sacral chakra isn’t about curing anything.
